Well i just got a job at chuckle cheeses, yea i know but it pays good, at least what i can get...i am 17

Anyway i found out that we will be trained in everything from being that damn mouse to doing the cash register. One problem is i am nervous about doing the cash register because i have dyscalcula and well it really does make me bad at math. I mean i hate it i would spend hours upon hours studying math skills when i was little, i just couldnt get them. Simple math problems like 13-8 would drive me crazy and really embarrass me in the class room, i just never can picture the numbers or do them in my head it is so frustrating. At times it even prevented me from getting other jobs but i just have to get this job...

help me out, are cash registers hard to work with???

Don't be nervous and take your time. Once you ring up the sale, the cash register will tell you the total. The person will hand you the money, you will enter on the register the amount of money the person gave you, then you will hand them back their change, which the register will tell you. Be careful though, because MOST places will hold you accountable for the money in the drawer, in other words, if the incorrect amount is in the till at the end of the night, you may be held responsible - so the key is to NOT be nervous and take your time when you give change back. Also, count it out. Let's say the sale came to $5.30 and the person handed you a $20. The register will tell you the change due the customer is $14.70. Count the change to the customer starting with $5.30 up to what they gave you. So, $5.30 drop the change in their hands - brings you to $6.00, count out the ones $7, $8, $9, $10 then give them the ten dollar bill to make $20 which is what they gave you. It sounds confusing but try it out - it's no fail :0)

Don't round off. Never. Especially with an electronic cash register, the owner/manager will be able to determine down to the penny what was charged and what was paid. It's your job (among many others) to make sure that these two numbers are the same. Some stores keep little dishes or glasses of pennies. People sometimes don't like pennies as change, so they'll toss the pennies in there. Others, if they don't want to break a bill and end up with a pocketful of change, will take a penny or two and give it to you so the amount rounds up. But that's their decision. If they give you 20 cents for a 19 cent item, yes, you give them a penny change.

Something that helped me give correct change is to remember:
the most quarters you can give in change is 3, dimes are 2, nickles are 1 and pennies are 4. Cash registers aren't hard to work, but keep a calculator handy just in case. it may be hard at first, but practice really does help. And remember to be unreasonably nice to the customers. If your math skills are lacking a nice customer attitude might compensate for that. Good Luck.

No cash registers are not hard to work. Most of the new ones have a touch screen with the items listed. You just touch what they got. You will have to key in how much they give you, such as a 20.00, and the register will show how much change to give back. You will have to be careful with this and insure you give the correct change back. Take your time and don't be nervous. I know this is not easy but it will come to you. Good luck with your new job and I think the mouse is cute :-)

I have dyscalcula too is a major fear and a problem butheres the good news last year I started just like you at a fast food restaurant just nervous as heck.I was so worried that i got a calculator and carried with me to get comfortable with it then if I made a simple mistake anyone else could figure in their head I would refer to my calculator to avoid embarrassment..Next good thing is most cash registers now you simply punch in the amount they hand you and then it calculates your change for you.Iwas so nervous the night before I started my job that I sat down with my sister and we played store and i counted out diffrent amount of change.Well that was six months ago carrying a calculator paid off because people just thought I took my job seriously and i got promoted and received a huge raise.Im making 24000 a year now and I struggle my calculator is my best freind and im filled with determination because just like you I have to have this job.best wishes .You can overcome this just use tools to help you dont let fear overwhelm you.If I did it anyone can.

I work at McDonalds and a register isn't that difficult to become familiar with. It all depends on what kind, nonetheless, but they're all pretty simple. Almost no math is required since it does it all for you.
