Somewhat fun and completely free: The pubilc library (includes music, video, historical collections, etc). The botantical gardens - some things are green in winter (inside plantings). Wander through Title Wave Books or REI (close to each other). Attend the Fur Rondy events this week. Watch the start of the Iditarod in 2 weeks.Try to catch the bore tide coming up Turnagin Arm. Look for Beluga whales whenever you're near the salt water. Take a hike up at Roundtop. Check out free events and lectures at UAA on 36th Ave. Ski the bike paths (watch out for the moose). Walk the Coastal trail if the wind isn't strong. Mall walk on brutually cold days to get some exercise.

Fun and cheap: Go to the zoo - they've got some of each of the Alaskan land animals. Attend a community theater performance (did that ourselves last night) - check out Cyrano's. The Art and History Museum is good. Check the concert series for upcoming events.

Visit the public lands information office and the visitor's center downtown for lots more ideas.l

Hope that helped.

One of the things that I found was fun to do in Alaska was to go on a gold rush tour. They have places where you can go and sift through terrain and try to find small pieces of gold and gold residue with the tools that they let you borrow during your excursion. I found some small pieces which were really neat. And if all else fails, most of them have gift shops were you can buy small samples of gold pieces and gold jewelry that you can buy or give as souvenirs to others, many at a reasonable price.

They also have some restaurants that brew their own beer and you can get freshly made beer from vats that you can view from the seating/dining area of the restaurant - which is cool.

But one of the most beautiful things to partake in would be to do a glacier cruise. Alaskan has some of the most beautiful glaciers in the world and it is very breathtaking to see them. I hope that this has been helpful to you.
