You don't need a common denominator to multiply fractions. You only need a common denominator if you're adding or subtracting fractions. The easiest way to do the problem you presented is to cancel common factors (cancel 8 from the 8 and 16, and cancel the 3 from the 9 and 15);

8/9 x 15/16 = 1/3 x 5/2 = 5/6

If you really want to know the common denominator, the first answerer is correct (it's 144), but it's not helpful in solving the problem.

It is 144. If you ever do not know and just need some denominator just multiply each by the other's denominator. The fraction with 9 on the bottom by 16 and the fraction with 16 on the bottom by 9. This time doing that gives you the lowest common denominator.

You'll have to settle for 9 times 16 or 144, because 9 and 16 have no common factors.

LCM (x,y) = xy / GCD (x,y)

where GCD (x,y) is the greatest common divisor of x and y, 1 in the case that x=9 and y = 16

Oh, and 72 is not going to work, despite what the comment following me says.

72=8*9

is not divisible by 16, because 9 is odd.

9=3x3
16=2x2x2x2
2x2x2x2x3x3=144 is the common denominator

9=3X3
16=2x2x2x2
no common denominator
However
8x15 / 9X16 =2x2x2x3x5 / 3x3x2x2x2x2
cancel tripple 2x2x2 in numerator and denominator
also cancel a 3 in numerator and denominator

=5 / 3x2 = 5/6

an easy trick is to multiply the two denominators by eachother to find a quick common denominator. This isn't nessecarily the lowest common denominator though.

To find the LCD, multiply 9 times 16.

9 x 16 = 144 is the COMMON DENOMINATOR.

Can you take it from here?

there's none but easiest way to do this is :
8=2x4...15=3X5....9=3x3&16=4x4so youll have
2x4x3x5/3x3x4x4....which is..2x5/3x4=10/12=5/6=0.833333
