it depends on who you ask really. most christians adhere to the belief that we are all born fallen and sinful, and can only be made whole and clean through salvation.

another point of view is that of john locke, who coined the term 'tabula rasa' or blank slate. he argued that we are the sum of our experiences, and that anything that happened to us shaped who we are. for example, if all anyone ever showed you was kindness, then you would grow up to be the kindest person you possibly could be, because kindness is the sum of your existence.
