Society says we have to. Women in magazines are considered the bench marks for beauty, and believe me, they do not wake up looking like that! So we (the common women) do our best to emulate that. It takes forever every day, but we continue to do it. We shave, pluck, curl, straighten, and that's just talking about hair... then there's the lotions, the clothing... need I go on?

Looking good does initially attract potential suitors so I guess that's one reason (not for everyone though!) That's why when you see single people on the 'hunt' for a partner of whatever sex, they wear their best clothes, best scent, get their hair done etc. I think it's natural. Look at peacocks with their fancy feathers to attract females!

But....I do think that media, fashion industry and cosmetic industry have a great deal to answer for. I think that I am a strong independent female but I have to admit when I see those L'Oreal adverts on the TV telling me that 'I'm worth it', I am very tempted!

I'm not sure that I agree with your venus fly trap statement though. Yes, I think all individuals make themselves presentable in the hope of finding a partner but it isn't the only reason and certainly not the main reason. It just helps! Women, on the whole, don't just do it to be noticed, they do it for themselves. I don't think that looking good is associate with power either. I like to think that most individuals have the intellect to look at other things, not just how much MAC a lady is wearing.

I like your question though!

It's actually something learnt from a very young age. I remember being about 10, going into my mother's bedroom, applying her lipstick and trying on her high heels because I wanted to be 'all grown up'. I pretended to be a grown woman, strutting around my mother's bedroom with my back straight and my head held high. I felt a sense of empowerment.

It is about the confidence it brings, so that women feel able to face the world every day. When we feel we look good on the outside, it makes us feel good on the inside and it shows to those around us, both men and women.

HTH : )

Somedays I wear make up and do my hair all nice, and somedays I don't. Right now I'm just hanging around the house so there's no reason to be all spiffed up. But when I do put on make up and work for awhile on my hair, it's to make me feel better about my appearance. I know I am attractive with or with out it, but it's my own personal preference. I believe that's how it is for all women. We all want to be attractive, even if just to ourselves, it gives a lot of confidence when you feel beautiful.. than you are beautiful.

well i think that women appearance is one of the most powerfull weapons she can use against both men and other women plus the more attractive a woman can be the more confidence she gain so i think that cosmetic mania has become a self fulfilling prophecy to women these days

Well I don't think all women care that much. But for the majority most women do. I think it is because society really trys to protray the "perfect women" in advertisments. Unconciously, women look at that and try to be that. It is impossible to be that way, but women do try. Of course women do want to look good for men to impress and they want to think that they are pretty enough for them. And some women just like to wake up and feel like they look good--for themselves. men do too of course, but they try a lot less in some cases. Anyway, I do think it is mostly societal pressures.

Depends on the woman, lots of women think for themselves and don't care what the media, or society expects about their appearance.

Why are men so particular about their hair, shaving, and their appearance? Do they worry about it to be noticed or is it an instrument of power?

For lots of women, its simply because we want to look better than we do. Its not necessarily about power or even to attract. Think of it from a different view. Many women wouldnt dream of leaving the house without makeup for fear of what they "really" look like

umm women like cosmetics because men are acctually more vain and judgemental then women are so we try to look good to impress, plus looking good gets you farther in life. A lot of women are like hardwired to put looks first so a lot of us always try to look the best we can
