Mt. Chimborazo, in Ecuador, was thought to be the world's highest mountain for centuries before the British surveying of India and the mountains of Nepal in the early 1800s. Afterwards, the next mountain thought to be the highest was Dhaulagiri in 1808. Then in 1838 it was Kanchanjunga, and finally in 1849 Everest took top honors.
