for a solid guitar it really depends on a few different things. tone, weight, and finish. poplar, basswood, ash, maple , and mahogany are the traditional solid woods used in solidbodys. poplar and basswood are lightweight, but dont lend themselves to transparent finishes, and are usually painted. the more figured woods are often highlighted with stains or clear finishes. i.e. flame maple or swamp ash or even burl walnut. the lighter woods usually exhibit a brighter sound quality as opposed to a mahogany body. the last axe I built was of laminated alder which sounded pretty nice but didnt have enough of a distinctive grain pattern to leave natural, so it got a paint finish. so it's pretty much your choice. the denser the wood the more mids and bass response it should have ( but solid maple seems pretty bright to me) solid wood is more $$ than laminated constuction. and figured wood costs quite a bit more than plainer stuff.check with stewart Mc donald's catalog for an idea of what wood will cost for an electric guitar project. thatll give you an idea.

Take a Dry erade marker and flow over it till you start to work out the colour of the sharpie fading. then you quite could have the means to wipe away the marker. I definitely have used this to keep my coffe tables and end tables from my niece and nephews Wrath.
