It's how it happened in the book. I haven't seen the movie yet so I'm not sure what they omitted but, if the reason for her death wasn't obvious, then they probably took out something they shouldn't have. That's kind of sad, really, I remember it being a thin book.

If she wouldnt have died the title wouldnt have made much sense because when the rope broke and she fell and drowned the boy built the bridge to Terabithia as sorta in her memory and so there would always be a terabithia otherwise it would have been gone forever since the rope broke and no one could get across I hope this helps.

she wasnt killed she well, um, drowned... you see she was trying to get across the creek to Terabithia on a really rainy adn windy day that caused her to fall adn drown

Because the author had someone close by die, so he wrote a book about the girl dieing by drowning...(maybe he was grieving?)

Maybe Leslie died to show Jess that the worlds of imagination that she taught him are under his own power, that he didn't need her to keep "believing".
