They are both good quality basses - in fact the Music Man basses made by Ernie Ball are considered in many circles to be the "industry standard" for modern active basses. However, the Warwick ranges (particularly the German made models - as opposed to the far-eastern manufactured ones) can be every bit as good as the Music Mans.

It really comes down to personal perference on feel, sound and look and possibly the current fashions in the types of music which you want to play.

If you look at both brands they have a roster of amazing players, although Music Man does tend to be seen as a bit more traditional and conservative. Well known Music Man players include Flea, Tony Levin, Bernard Edwards, Dave LaRue, Pino Palladino, Cliff Gallup, Mark Hoppus, Tim Commerford and many others. A list of MusicMan bass users can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Music_Man_%28company%29#Artists_who_use_Music_Man_instruments

Warwick are probably more associated with modern rock (and particularly nu-metal players). A list of notable players is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warwick_%28bass_guitar%29#Notable_players and includes the likes of Sam Rivers, Mike Inez, Traa Daniels, Paul Gray, Chris Wolstenholme, Mike Kroeger, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle.

Overall in terms of which is "best" it's probably a draw. Musicman has probably the more respected heritage since they have been going from the 1970s and their original basses were designed by Leo Fender (and retain that traditional, updated Fender look) and are highly prized by studio musicians looking for a driving but versatile sound. Warwick is probably more of a "happening" brand in terms of modern rock music styles.

It all comes down to which one happens to do it for you.

Warwick, they have a reputation for making guitars, especially bass guitars. Ernie ball have a reputation for making strings for guitars. The ernie should still be good quality though.
