Surface area implies a 3 dimensional figure; with length, width, and height - like a box. Rectangle implies a 2 dimensional figure; with length and width only. The area of a rectangle is width times length. For the surface area of a box-like figure, you need to get the areas of the 6 sides and add them up.

the volume is V = x^2 * h the service area is 2x^2 + 4xh since surface area is 96, so 2x^2 + 4x h = 96, x^2 + 2x h = 48, or h = 24/x - x/2 V = x^2 * (24/x - x/2) = 24x - 1/2 x^3 take the derivative of V over x, V' = 24 - 3/2 x^2 when x = +/- 4 V' = 0, discard x's -ve value because the dimention can't be -ve. V(4) = 64 which is stationary value of V V" = -3x when x=4, V" = -12, so V(4) = 64 is the maximum value of V when x = 4, h = 4 in other words, when the dimensions of base and height are equal, the volume is the largest

a rectangle is a 2 dimensional figure, as such it does not have surface area. the area of a rectangle is found by multiplying the width by the height. so, a 3 inch by 5 inch rectangle would have an area of 15 square inches (3*5=15).
now if you were talking about a rectangular prism (which is a 3 dimensional figure) which has 6 rectangular surfaces, then the surface area is the sum of the area of the six rectangles. So, given a 2 inch by 4 inch by 5 inch rectangular prism we would have:
2 surfaces with dimensions 2 by 4
2 surfaces with dimensions 4 by 5
2 surfaces with dimensions 2 by 5
the surface area would then be
(2*4)+ (2*4)+ (4*5)+ (4*5)+ (2*5)+ (2*5) = 76 square inches

Surface area= the sum of the areas of all the sides. aka find the area of each side(think: how many sides does a rectangle have? how many of each side?) and add them all up...

you times the width by the length
example:
width equals 3
length equals 7
you simply get 21^2
