So many of the students at my highschool refuse to stand for the pledge God forbid they even say it. They can't even take a few seconds out for a moment of silence. Where will our country be in twenty years? With the lack of patriotism, our country is in great danger of being taken over from within. What our founding fathers and great leaders of the past would think of our people today. It is only a few words and a few seconds of silence. Many can stay silent when the pledge is being said why can't they do it when it is not? I just heard the national anthem sung by a young girl. She did not have any heart behind her but instead seemed to be showboating trying to impress with her ability to sing. Not the time and place, take it to American Idol.... Your thoughts?

Of course, there was no pledge or moment of silence when the founding fathers were around, and I don't know that they would have approved of either practice. I like both myself, and I always made a point of standing tall and straight when I said the pledge. But that's me. And I'm with you on the singing, too. The national anthem should be sung with passion. It's not a time for elaborate interpretations and showboating.

I was in public school twenty years ago and we had people who couldn't shut up back then. It wasn't tied to a lack of patriotism as much as poor attention spans created by an entertainment-craving public.
That young girl may have strong feelings towards the country -- hence, she was trying to sing it 'better' than anyone else-- it may not have come out quite right, but that does not mean she is not patriotic.

Because kids nowadays grow up in households with parents who have no respect for their own country...if there are even any parents at all. Add the fact the 75% - 80% of all national media outlets...TV stations, radio, magazines, newspapers, Hollywood...are run and/or influenced by liberal democrats. They seem to think snubbing your nose to patriotism and respect for your country is what the Frist Amendment to our Constitution is all about. They don't care much for what the Fathers of our Country put down on paper...as long as it gets their face and voice on all those national media outlets. They all have a false sense of themselves and think they are above the law and not responsible for anything that happens to them. Therefore, kids that see this stuff on TV and in magazines think it's OK to act like that. It tears the fabric of our society apart. It's shameful.

I think what you're witnessing is a very positive thing, although I can see that you obviously refuse to see it that way.

Allegiance? The only allegiance should be to truth, wisdom, love. Not a flag, not a country. Not a way of bordering oneself off from the rest of the world.

I like the idea of standing in silence though. Silence is very powerful. Silence represents the unmanifested from which all things come.

Peace.

I think alot of people (not necessarily teenagers or young kids) are turned off by the way the evangelical christian right has taken over this country... Conforming to anything dealing with "one nation under God" is seen these days as a loss of our inherent freedoms. And don't forget, our founding fathers were labeled as "unpatriotic" and "traitors" by the Britts just before we bailed....

I think that voting and treating others well demonstrates much greater patriotism than mindlessly repeating The Pledge of Allegiance. These are actions, as opposed to mouthing words, that show how great a citizen you are and how much you love your country.

I guess I'm just hung up more on demonstrable actions than meaningless phrases, if those phrases aren't backed up by good works.

I bet those kids don't amount to much. It takes a pretty shallow person to be disrespectful. High school is no place for a lot of individualism. Leave that for college. Erase those people from your vision and pursue your ways. Or, you could start vocalizing your disgust with their behavior.

their parents do not respect this country either. many people these days are noncommital about tradition and patriotism. america on the whole is very inert and apathetic. todays teens are only mirroring the ones who came before them. don't blame them, try your best to teach them.

Because they have lost self respect. If they do not have self respect then they do not have any respect for anything or anyone else! That is why they are rude, crude, and do not care for anything but themselves or they little click!
