That is a major problem with the iPod. Even though it has to capability to be used as a thumb drive it requires a file created by iTunes to be able to play any loaded music. Bring it back and get a different mp3 player. Find one that does not require a specific program to load it.

I suppose an outcome, and probably the only outcome, is to purchase a later operating system (Windows XP, as it will be cheaper than Windows Vista)

Itunes will definitely work on there, if it doesn't work on Windows 98, then what other outcome is there?

I hope this helps, and good luck getting Itunes to work!

Put down the cash for an upgrade to windows xp. Windows 98's security is so full of holes (because they stopped updating it), you could use it to water your lawn. It's really just a matter of time before your computer dies anyway, so you might as well try to prevent that from happening.

I suggest you get an older version of iTunes, or perhaps you could use a different service. If all else fails, you can contact Apple for support.
