please help. is the question "How do they decide what animal is on top of the food chain"? please help.I have a break from school but my teacher gave my clas homework he made people ask questions on index cards and other people have to give one page answer and he doesnt let us use our textbooks so help.please.

They decide who is on top by using trophic levels. As the levels go up the creature receives less and less energy. As a result there is a maximum of 5 trophic levels since animals higher than this level receives so little energy.

"They" don't really decide--they observe. I guess if I had to say who actually did the deciding, it would have to be the creator. For example, a cat is above a rat or a sparrow on the food chain because a cat is fast and can therefore catch and eat small critters. However, a cat is below a large bird like a hawk or an eagle because those birds are faster and stronger. The food chain was decided by innate factors of each animal, but I suppose some things can impact it--like a weapon like a bow and arrow could change the placement of man and bears on the food chain--with a gun, man would probably come out on top, but without a gun, the bear would have a better chance.

ell, It has to do with intelligence. For example: a fish ear smaller fish. Now a bear eats fish because he has the intelligence to catch fish with his paws. Man is a lot smaller than the bear, but the man has the intelligence to kill the bear if necessary or avoid him all together.
The lower something is on the food chain the less intelligent.
The lower, the more natural instinct takes over. A fish is not intelligent, but it will eat when it is hungry, instinct.
So here, the small fish is on the bottom,
The larger fish is next to the bottom,
the bear is next on top of the 2 fish.., then man is on the very top.

I'd have to say whatever animal doesn't have a natural predator..
Who is "they" anyway?
If you want to be biblical about it, God gave people dominion over all animals..
