The perimeter is the sum of all the sides. Since it´s a sum the result would be 26 (not squared). If you were calculating the area it would be 8 x 5 = 40 squared.
Another example:
If you sum: meters + meters = meters
If you multiply: meters x meters = meters²
And this you posted is not a square, a square must have all sides with the same size.
I hope I helped you!

Are you sure you are talking about a square?
A square is EQUAL on all 4 sides.
The terms height and width do not apply to a square.
You are talking about a rectangle.
width = 5 inches and length = 8 inches
Add everything to find perimeter.
5 inches + 5 inches + 8 inches + 8 inches = P
10 inches + 16 inches = P
26 inches = P
Perimeter is NEVER given in squared inches.
ONLY area is SQUARED.

The structure you describe is not a square, but a rectangle. The perimeter would be 26 inches. A square measure would be for area, not perimeter which is a length.
