I did not have a wrist strap available and needed to get my pc built. I was on carpet touching my motherboard and processor. My carpet is, you know, regular carpet.

Is my motherboard doomed? Is anything doomed?

To answerer number 2: what is considered a shock and how big does it have to be to be a large effect? Thx

Most likely, you had your hand on the metal part of the case while you were reaching in for the motherboard. That would have discharged any charge you had built up and prevented any damage to the boards in the case.

I have a wrist strap that I use any time I'm installing something in front of a customer. But any other time, I just keep one hand on the metal part of the case to keep myself discharged. I've never zapped anything.

did you actually get shocked by the parts when you came in to contact with them? if not, then there's little chance you actually did any harm to them. just make sure that before touching any parts in a computer, to ground yourself(like the above poster said) or use a static wrist band

UPDATE: a shock would be anyhting you could feel. of course, you could not feel it too, but the chance of anything more than a minor shock(like touching someone and shocking them, that amount of electrcity) hurting your components is minimal.

and as the guy below me said, you probably had already touched the box or something else metal and had discharged yourself before you had touched anyhting, so i wouldn't worry about it.

It can be if you had a static discharge. The only way you'll know is to put it together and see if it works. You can discharge yourself by touching a metal part of your computer before you touch any of the parts.
