A man lent $ 20,000 at a certain rate per cent, and $ 18,000 at 2% less. His annual income from both sources was $ 6,480. Find the rates.

20,000R + 18,000(R-.02) = 6480
R(20,000 + 18,000) = 6480 + .02(18000)
R = [6480 + .02(18,000)]/(20000 + 18000)
R = .18

Therefore: 18 percent and 16 percent.

Use:
$20000 X R + $18000 X R-2 = $6480.
Remember R is a rate or percentage.
