What is the safest neighborhood/area in Philadelphia. I went there once (North Philly) and all I saw were vacant burned out buildings ( very sad). My husband received a job offer there but I am not to crazy about the idea.

I've lived in Philly and its suburbs for my entire life. In all honesty, it is NOT a bad city. It is actually quite diverse and unique. I will admit that there are bad neighborhoods (and north philly is definitaly one of the notoriously bad neighborhoods).

The safest neighborhoods in philadelhpia often have the most expensive homes (which are usually pretty nice). some of the expensive neighborhoods include center city, society hill and rittenhouse square.

a nice and safe part of philly is called manyunk. it has a cute main street with lots of restaurants and shops. it is very safe and almost has a little towny feeling.

another nice area in philadelphia is called chesnut hill. it is near the suburbs and also feels like a little town. it has old beautiful homes. its also has a main street with lots of stores, boutiques and art galleries (however it is less hip than manyunk). it is a great place for families.

parts of northeast philadelphia are okay. it is not the nicest part of the city, and it can be dangerous. (aka...it was a lot nicer in the 60s)

also, if you don't mind being outside of the city limits, there are TONS of great suburbs that are only 20 minutes outside the city. some include cheltemhem, upper dublin, horsham and erdenheim.

philadelphia is truely a great place to live. if you find the right neighborhoods, it is not dangerous. there is always something unique going on and i'm sure that if you and your husband make the decision to move here, you wont be disappointed.

Stay away from North Philly. U might want to choose a place to live depending on where he works, since this is a large area and commuting can be very long. I would tell him to ask other people at his new job where they live.

The Main Line/Villanova area is very very nice, but is very expensive; i live in Doylestown, and it is safe, but not close to Philly. Best bet might be around Plymouth Meeting/ Blue Bell in Montgomery County.
