I play the flute and I was used to play the clarinet. The thing is that once you get braces, it starts to hurt to play the clarinet. But the flute is alot easier to play on. If you like a more suttle sound I'd suggest you play the clarinet. They are usually playing the harmony in band peices. If you want a sound that stands out I would suggest the flute. They have more of the melodies in songs. I say you play the flute but if you change your mind, you can always ask to play two instruments. :)

Ask yourself this...how important of a role do you want in the songs your band performs? ("Important" may be a poor choice of words since all instruments in a band are important in their own way.)
Woodwinds (flute, clarinet etc) are more likely to play supporting roles in a band. If you want to play main melody and themes a brass instrument like the trumpet or trombone will have more leading roles. This of course won't be true 100% of the time, but IMO it will more often than not.
Either role may not matter to you and there's no reason it should, but if it's something you do care about go ahead and try both flute and clarinet but also consider the trumpet. There's only 3 valves on a trumpet so it may not be as complicated as a woodwind where you'll use all 10 fingers. There's no wrong choice here, just think about what attracts you to which instrument and think about the type of music you want to play most.

I have actually played both in my time. I started with flute, but quickly switched to clarinet as I found I was better at forming the mouth shape necessary to play well.
They are both interesting insturments with pros and cons.
However, personally I feel the clarinet is better suited to a wider range of styles, is somewhat less common than the flute, and I found it more fun.
My opinion for what it's worth.
Ultimately, which do you enjoy more? The great thing is that you are exploring music, keep that up!

i would say you go with the clarinet. i play the flute and it does leave you out of breath and t is difficult to play because you have to memorize the key locaitions since u cant see them. but if you already have played different musical instruments and you want a challenge then go with the flute.

Everyone has their problems. I was overweight my freshmen year (206 lbs at 6" 1') and was teased all the time. It's hard when there are just too many jerks that you cant do anything about. People just need to grow up. Now I'm a senior (145lbs) going on to play college volleyball. They wont dare to insult me anymore. You need to have courage and strength to get through this. Don't ask for anything. You just need to focus on yourself and doing good in high school. Don't allow some ridiculous freshmen to ruin these four years that can turn out to be the best four years you can have.

i say the clarinet. it's got a nice sound, it's pretty easy to play, and you get to play the melody in a lot of songs(that makes it so much easier). also, my best friend says the flute leaves you out of breath, and it can hurt your ears sometimes (when it's really high).

well, from expirence, i would have to say flute. i'v played for four years and i absolutly love it!! it fairly easy and does't take long to pick up on. clairnets are fine too, i'v also played them, and it took quite alot of air. if you plan to be in marching band later, flute will be eaiser to march with, trust me. also, later if you want to play saxaphone, you will be set! basically all of the fingerings are the same, so its easy to switch (i did this for jazz band). its less expensive since you don't have to buy reeds, but you should change your key pads once they start get old, but its not very expensive and you don't have to do it very often at all. don't listen to the person who said its hard ot memorize the fingerings. if you pratice like you are supposed to, you will be fine. a good muscian will dedicate themselves to learning. and since you memorize them, that means you are so much more talented!! whatever you choose,i hope ir works out well!! i hope my info was useful! ^_^
