Do you have any neighbors or relatives that you admire, that have been active in their community or church? This does not say famous does it.? Sounds like the teacher is looking for a positive person, maybe in your own community. If you know such a person, ask to interview them, take a tape recorder along to record them. Ask about the community or church service they have done, have any people in your church or family been active in the Civil rights movement, let them tell in their own words, what it was like. Too many students write about the famous and forget the unsung hero's among us.

I would write about Muhammad Ali. He had so many ups and downs in his life that he's incredibly interesting. And as revered as he is now as the Champ, you would never know he was such a pariah after he dodged the draft for Vietnam. And he's not just a straight-forward good guy, he's incredibly complex.

Even if you don't choose him, I'd suggest reading up on him anyway. Good luck with your report!

Depending on your political affinities, you could try writing something on Barack Obama, otherwise Will Smith is actually a pretty decent guy from what I've heard.

Russell Simmons.

This man has built a music and clothing line empire worthy of noting. In addition he has many programs to help poor black people out of poverty, and he's been very poilically active and helping to educate young people about political issues.

There's so much Mr. Simmons has done, and his people love him for it all.
