You should use a starter fertilizer. It will say on the bag or box it is a starter fertilizer for new seed lawns. Do your prep Root-till, and add soil conditioners as needed.

It depends on the fertilizer, read the packaging, some are good for before you seed your lawn area, and others do better on grass once it's grown for a few months.

use a starter fertilizer when you seed, or something around a 10-10-10 or 12-12-12 formula to get the seed started. also water real good, but don't drown the seed, they will rot if standing in water too long.
