In traditional political thought (not US "thinking", but worldwide), socialism is as far left as capitalism is to the right. Both capitalism and socialism seek to guide the market to encourage growth and spending, but capitalist governments let the market do what it wants without any controls; socialist governments try to guide the market to where it's needed.

The new form of socialistic capitalism practiced across Latin America will be a growing trend over the next 50 years. Governments let capitalism have a freer hand than most socialists, but then the governments fill needs in the market themselves, rather than trying to force businesses to do it. That's what's going on in Nicaragua, El Salvador, Bolivia, Venezuela, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.

It's working. The only people dissatisfied with the situation in Latin America are the wealthiest elite who would rather maximize their personal gain and see the rest of their countries in poverty.

Here's an old political joke from the Soviet Union, explaining the difference between communism and capitalism:

Under capitalism, man is exploited by his fellow man.
Under communism, it is the other way around.

Capatilists believe in a free market and private property, it is based on Adam Smiths book "Wealth of Nations". Socialists believe the government should own most property, or at least the major businesses and control major resources. They also believe that the government should make most economic decisions. The United States is mostly capitalistic, with some regulation on the economy. Some countries in Europe have something similar to socialist systems, I believe some of the Scandanavian Countries, Cuba is Socialist, and the Soviet Union had a socialist economy, seeing as Socialism is the basis for communism, or at least a first step.

Communism controls the means of production and there is not any unemployment. Socialism enables unemployment. Socialism takes money from extra efficient earners and provides it to much less efficient electorate with the aid of taxation. In communism , there at the instant are not such a issues as an electric bill or paying hire via fact the government controls each little thing and supplies all centers. In a socialist atmosphere average and better paid workers pay maximum of their earnings to the government, pay their costs and are allowed to chosen to own or hire the residing house of their determination (many regulations might stick to) . Socialism enables inner maximum industries as long as their salary are taxed in accordance to government rules.

Socialism
refers to a broad array of doctrines or political movements that envisage a socio-economic system in which property and the distribution of wealth are subject to social control. This control may be either direct—exercised through popular collectives such as workers' councils—or indirect—exercised on behalf of the people by the state. As an economic system, socialism is often characterized by state or community ownership of the means of production.

The modern socialist movement had its origin largely in the working class movement of the late-19th century. In this period, the term "socialism" was first used in connection with European social critics who condemned capitalism and private property. For Karl Marx, who helped establish and define the modern socialist movement, socialism implied the abolition of money, markets, capital, and labor as a commodity.

Capitalism
generally refers to an economic system in which the means of production are mostly privately[1] owned and operated for profit, and in which distribution, production and pricing of goods and services are determined in a largely free market. It is usually considered to involve the right of individuals and groups of individuals acting as "legal persons" or corporations to trade capital goods, labor and money (see finance and credit).

Theories of capitalism first developed in the context of the Industrial Revolution and the Cold War and were meant to explain, justify, or criticise the private ownership of capital; to explain the operation of capitalistic markets; and to guide the application or elimination of government regulation of property and markets. (See economics, political economy, laissez-faire.)

This is nothing but different ways of cheating. Socialism says all are equal and government will take care of your life. Capitalism says, survival of the fittest. The better you perform, the better you will be rewarded. In both the cases, the public will be the looser.
