Original Xbox Live Setup?

Question

I have laptop with a wireless internet card inside of it and a place for an ethernet cable to go into. I have an original Xbox and a subscription code to Xbox Live, but when i plug my cables in, it comes up with, IP SERVER COULD NOT BE DETECTED! What sould i do. I have NETGEAR by the way, if that helps, but it is on the other side of my house. Thanks in advance and any websites (w/ and w/o pictures) would be VERY helpful. Thanks!

P.S.-Do you need the Xbox started kit to start Xbox Live or can u just have the 12 month subscription
