They chose my peom as a semi-finalist in some contest and say that the poem will published in a book. Is this some sort of scam or for real? It kind of sounds fishy to me.

Yes, it's a scam. What poetry.com and sites like them do is play on people's perception of the word "publish". Publish just means making it public, which technically means they could hang a copy of your poem in their office hallway and they've fullfilled their legal obligation.

In some cases, the poetry actually is is published...in an obscure book that they don't market and that is not sold anywhere but on their own website. Then they count on the fact that the hundreds of poets, whose work is in the book, will coerce friends and family members into buying copies of the book and the poets don't see a dime of that money.

Other times it's published on their website and they want YOU to pay to get it in a book.

You're better off publishing it yourself independently.

funny...they chose my poem too. Hum....I think it's a scam. they emailed me a letter and when i read the intire thing, it said that i had to pay money to get a copy of the book with my poem in it.Personally, i use that site when i have poetry projects for school. That's just a place where everyone can see your poem. It's a scam

I used to post on their message boards, but I don't know anything about the book. I've heard of scams like that -- basically, if they want you to pay for the book, it's a scam. If it's legit, you should get free copies & an additional prize!

They chose my poem one time and said it was going to be published in a book and that I could order it. I order it , and it's been 7 years and no book. Don't trust them.

Yes it is a scam to get your money, the same thing happened to my mother in law but she didn't go for it, one being she don't have the type of money they where wanting and another if you win something you should'nt have to pay, they pay you. All they really do is put your poem on their website for show.

Hm... I got two published in books on there. Amazing how they ended up on the first page of each book. I think it's silly, I know so many people who got published on there as well.

A couple of years back I joined and was invited to the big celebration dinner in Washington DC. I never did attend. I was recently invited to join again but now there is a fee. When I initially signed up there was no fee. I guess times have changed.
