I have a bunch of white circular spots in my tank on the glass and other rocks. I looked at one of my saltwater snails the other day and one of them grew and there was a feather coming out of it. I looked closer at the other ones and if you look extremely close, there is something that looks like a feather on them. They are white. I'm not for sure that all these specks are feather dusters but I don't know much about them. They seem to keep duplicating in my tank and I'm not too sure what to do about that. There seems to be more and more everyday. there are 2 of them that are bigger with about 2 mm long of "feathers". Is anyone knowledgeable in this area and could help me out as to if they are feather dusters and if they duplicate fast?

Look closely and I'll bet you'll see they're growing in a spiral. These are baby feather dusters. They won't get very big (they're not the Hawaiian variety). Unfortunately, they - like corraline algae - don't distinguish between your live rock and your glass, filter, protein skimmer, etc. They will reproduce fairly rapidly.

About all you can do with either is scrape them off where you don't want them.

Serpulid worm a relative to the feather duster. This is a sign of a healthy tank. These Dusters extend hair like polyps to capture food and oxygen from passing currents.

They are harmless to your tank but can quickly cover your glass. These are usually introduced from live rock.

They can get up to 1" across if conditions premit. They are harmless and actually people buy them to seed their tanks with.

I usually scrape them off the front and sides but the rear of my tank is polluted with them. They are forming their own coral reef back there.

Here is a link to see what they will grow into:

Yep Serpulid worm or better known as feather duster worms. They won't hurt your tank. They can get as big as an inch, then they are really cool.

No problems with them though other than they popup over night.

Yup, little dusters. They arent the kind though that will get real big like you see in fish stores. They will probably only grow to be about a half inch in diameter. I just use my scrapper and scrape them off the front and sides of the glass when i notice them. Just accept them lol

Depends on what kind of fish. Salmon live in the ocean but spawn in freshwater. Their hatchlings start life in fresh water then swim back to the ocean. I am not sure what organ allows them to do this (most likely the kidneys) but several species of saltwater fish can do this. I haven't heard of a freshwater fish that spawns in saltwater but there are also fish that live in estuaries where salt and fresh water mix. If you were to take a freshy and throw him in salt or vice versa they would probably die from kidney failure within 10 minutes.
