I apparently need a new circuit board in my boiler. Boiler is 12 years old. I have been quoted £420 plus VAT to supply and fit the part so guts of £500. To all Corgi engineers in the UK - is this reasonable??

It's tricky as it'a a friend of a friend who is doing the work for me. Reckoned the part was £200 odd then the labour on top. Plus the guy who is my friend has convinved him to repair a leaking pump within that cost too. Does this make it any better? I hate getting shafted with these things...

A lot depends on the make and model of the boiler, PCBs start at £100 and the most I have ever paid was for a Potterton Combi £305 Occasionally as one has said they can be repaired but that's not very often. The problem is with some boilers and again the Potterton are favourite if another component has failed gas valve or the like then the new PCB can go up in a puff of smoke and that's a hundred quid + gone, and they will not replace it under guarantee so be sure its safe to put the new board on first. Get a second estimate from another CORGI reg installer.

Completely unreasonable. A new boiler plus radiators fitted can be bought out the papers for £600. A brand new Bosch boiler £900 on the net. Go looking. The guys taking you for a chump tell him to GTF!
You need to post boiler type and fault you had with it for comment.
You never mentioned boiler type. In my oppinion if the price for the replacement parts is accurate with the labour and your looking at a £500 bill because you are in London area then i would seriously consider purchasing a new boiler Bosch Worcester condinsate combi. At least then you have piece of mind that your monthly heating bills will be reduced, and you have reliable servicable equipment in your home.
Link to online shop for Worcester boiler 35 CDI this is a quality piece of equipment and you will get it for £950. Your plumber shouldnt be taking any more than £250 to install and test. Its less than a days work. Ive used Worcester for past 15 years and they have been faultless. I hate the thought of throwing good money after bad servicing a 12 year old boiler also think of the fuel cost savings over next couple of years. http://www.heatandplumb.com/acatalog/Worcester_Greenstar_35CDi_Gas_Condensing_Combination_Boiler.html

Its funny how the price of heating spares rockets in cold weather!! I hired a Corgi fitter to repair my boiler, he charged £150 to "replace a seal". When it failed again within 3 months, I bought a complete new unit for £8. My brother was quoted £2,500 to replace his boiler as it was "beyond repair", I cleaned the flues with a special tool costing £4, it worked perfectly for another 5 years. I've been quoted £300 to replace control boards that I've repaired for 50p. Find the right price for the board from one of these suppliers and then you can tell your friends friend to go and jump.

NO...but! reasonable and genuine are not the same thing.
prices of parts for old and/or obsolete boilers can be excessive...if your boiler is an obsolete type or a non brand name model then parts can be hard to find and thus expensive. my advice would be to get a second opinion. if second engineer says same price it's time to change the boiler!
outside london area £1500 (ish) should see you with a new vaillant or other top brand boiler installed and working.

That is an absolute rip off. Why not buy the PCB yourself and fit it. it is not difficult. Just switch the power off to the boiler, undo the screws that hold the Pcb in place, diconnect the wires from the sockets and fot the new one in reverse order. Trade price for a Pcb is about £40/£60. When you buy one just tell them the make and serial number of the boiler.
