i had a cd come to me that turns out to have been burned to a dvd type cd. i see that 1 of my older computers has a dvd-rom drive. originally, this comp didnt have a dvd-rom drive. just has a floppy, 2 hd's, and a cd-rw drive. i want to 'cannibalize' this old box and transplant it into this machine. it'll be out of 1 of those 'e-machines'. and what's the best way to install this since i wouldnt have a guide to this thing.

just install it like a regular cdrom drive. unplug the power cord, then pull the side cover off. locate the rom drive and you should have bays under it to put the dvdrom in. you'll hook the same data cable that the current rom drive is hooked to. on the back of the dvd drive there are jumpers. look and set it to slave. now insert it into the bay hook use the data cable plug that is in the middle of the one thats hooked into the cdrom drive. now plug the power plg into the dvd drive and use the screws to hold it into place. you're done. to do this process, you'll need to remove the metal slug behind the plastic cover on the front of the computer. you'll slide the new drive in from the front, not the back. you'll also need to install power dvd or win dvd to play dvds. XP will automatically install the drivers for the dvd drive. there is no need to remove the cdrom drive.

yes it'll be compatible,it will not change anything, I would install it along with the one you presently have by selecting it as "slave" before installing it, you can install it on the second cable connection of the CD rom thats already installed. In order to switch the drive from master to slave, you need to look at the end where the data and power cables attach and there will also be a small array of pins with a plastic lined jumper crossing some of the pins, if you look closely you will see a configuration graph that gives the setup details closeby, sometimes on the bottom of the drive. By using 2 drives you can burn directly from one cd to another without first having to copy the file to your hard drive and then burning it, sometimes you can burn one cd to another in under 2 minutes...

Teh previous repliers are correct...

HOWEVER, *IF* you connect the cannibalized DVD to the SAME cable as a another drive, you'll have to change the jumper settings to SLAVE or MASTER depending on how you want to set it up.
