I'm a first time Mom and I'm 35 weeks pregnant. During my pregnancy, everyone has put their two cents in on what I need and don't need and the one item that has received the most backlash is the bassinet! I have a bassinet on my baby registry and everyone has been telling me that we won't even need it. It's just SOOOO cute, we can't resist the urge to buy it, but I don't want to feel like we're wasting our money, either. Plus, I won't be ready to put the baby in his or her room just yet. Are bassinets really necessary? I'm just trying to get some feedback.

One more question, if we decide against the bassinet, does anyone have any other ideas on where I can put Nugget (our nickname for the baby) during the first month or two?

Thanks!

Honestly? You don't need one. While there are some that are very cute, they aren't useable for very long.

We bought a pack-n-play with a bassinet feature for our daughter. It was set up in our room before she was born and she slept in it until she was 7-8 months old (for the first few months she was in it exclusively, after that she took naps in her crib and slept nights in the basi.). We have found it to be very helpful! While you can take the pack-n-play with you when you go visiting (grandparent's house, for example), use it if you are staying in a hotel (we've found that at some hotels it costs more to get a room with a pack-n-play in it and the one time that we used a hotel p-n-p, it seemed about as comfortable as a sleeping on a board and the baby slept with us), and put the baby in it as he/she gets older, none of those things is really easily the case with a bassinet.

If you want to get a bassinet, then I say go ahead and get it. Just understand that while they may be cute, they are not (in my opinion, at least) practical at all.

Good luck!

No they aren't 'necessary' but I've used one for both of my children and plan to for the next one. The nice thing about a bassinet is they are smaller than a crib, so baby doesn't feel like an island in the ocean, they are VERY easy to move around, and they don't take up much room. That being said, the newer bassinets I've seen are way froo-froo and IMHO way too expensive. I've just got a plain old bassinet. No vibrator, rocker, hood, mobile.

You can put the baby anywhere that it is safe from falls and suffocation. A crib is fine for a newborn. Time honored places include laundry baskets and dresser drawers. (My friend used a drawer for a few months, pulled out of the dresser.) No puffy blankets/pillows, stuffed animals, make sure the sides are ridged enough that it can not fall/sag onto the baby.

Good luck

With baby 1 I didn't have one, and I didn't realize until she was sitting up that I would've really used one a lot...by then it was too late. Instead we ended up moving her crib into our room. With baby 2 I had already decided to purchase 2 things I didn't think I would want when I had baby 1, but figured out later I would really use it. That's a bassinet and a playyard. Now that baby 2 is here, I am SO glad I have the bassinet. If you decide to get a playyard you can get one that has the bassinet level, and it might do what you are wanting in a traditional bassinet. It is SO nice to be able to have baby in the room with you when you are having to get up in the middle of the night.

I actually liked having the bassinet. But I did not buy one....I borrowed my sister's. The first few days, we all slept in the living room, and the baby was in there. After that, I moved to the bed and the baby came with me in the bassinet for a few weeks. I have a twin bed in the nursery as well, and I slept there when the baby was in her crib for a week or 2, then got back in my own bed.
The baby outgrew it REALLY fast.......but it was really nice to have the little bed on wheels that I could take anywhere in the house with me. I am totally split on if they are a waste or not. I urges you have to see if the good uses/convenience outweighs the the fact that they outgrow it so fast.........good luck.

Honestly? If I were to have another baby, I would definitely borrow a bassinet again. I loved having it. But would not want to waste the money and buy one.......hope that helps.

One of my moms friends loaned me a bassinet with my second pregnancy and I put it next to my bed for the first month because my son had to share a room with the babyand I wanted to make sure the little one was sleeping through the night before putting her in the crib at nights.
With this baby(I am about 9 weeks) I plan on getting one of the playpens with a bassinet feature so when he/she outgrows the bassinet or within the first month(like the other) I wouldnt have "wasted" money because I can use the playpen.
Just know that the baby will grow out of the bassinet so quickly but if you want to get one then get one, its not only your baby but your money.

Bassinets are a waste of money...I'm glad I didn't buy one...my son was 10 pounds at birth and now at 4 months he's 18 1/4 pounds and 26 inches tall...so a bassinet would have been useless awefully quick!

We just used the crib and then he co slep with us a lot (cause I nurse him) and that was alot easier...you don't even have to get up to feed him...but only do that if you are confident that he's safe in bed with the two of you...

I also put a twin bed in the nursery...so I can co sleep in there with him...Myhusband is a heavy sleeper and snores...so sometimes I dont' feel comfortable co sleeping with him and baby...so me and baby just crash in the nursery...

You're absolutely wasting money on the "cute " bassinet...get something more useful for the money...like a really "CUTE" college fund... :)

I loved having a bassinet I put the baby in it right next to my bed. i could reach over and check the baby really easily. And breast feeding was easier. I dont think a bassinet is necessary but I liked mine as the crib was too big to fit in my bedroom and I really didnt like the idea of the baby being down the hall. PS I love the little nick name nugget how cute!!

If you are going to have your baby sleeping in your room for the first few months, a bassinet is a good idea. I have 3 boys and a baby on the way, and I have always had one next to my bed, because I never put them into their rooms unti.l they were a little older. I just bought one the other day for my little girl that is due in March. Good Luck.

i'm a mom of two toddlers and not in any respect used a bassinet. With the two I only used the play pen with the bassinet attachment. Even then basically for 2 months then they slept of their crib of their own room. solid luck!!

Bassinettes are good for the new ones. It allows you to have your baby in your bedroom with you. Making it easier to get up for the middle of the night feedings, and diaper changes. Plus, I think it also helps baby to not feel "out in the open" too much after being in the womb. As for an alternative to a bassinett, some people have used a drawer from a dresser or chest of drawers. One of the bigger drawers. Well padded, , with blankets underneath the baby. The bassinet helps more, more room for the baby and easier to get the baby in and out. Congrats on Nugget! Take care.
