We have a 2004 Subaru Forester, and are driving to southern Oregon, over the Siskiyou Pass, where chains are often required in winter. I understand that they are not recommended for the Subaru....are they required anyway? What do you suggest?

"Chain" chains are not recommended. There's not enough clearance.
Get "cable" chains. They have a lower profile.
BTW...on an AWD...You put them on the front.

i would check with the highways people but studded tires are often accepted too and not as hard on the car.
