It is supposed to indicate to the other prisoners that in their midst is a man who is on his way to be executed by the state right that very moment.

Green Mile Dead Man Walking

The Green Mile was a movie about the events that take place in a prison in the south (Alabama?) in the 1930's.

"The Green Mile" referred to the green tile on the floor of the "Death Row" building of the prison. The prisoners on death row were housed there until their executions. The guards said "Dead Man Walking" when one of those prisoners went by because the prisoners were going to be executed, so they were basically just dead men still walking around.

The Green Mile is a deathrow cellblock and any prisoner there is a "dead man" and that is the phrase used when the condemned is being escorted down the hall the last time.

They yell "Dead man walking" in order to alert the other prison guards that they are walking a potentially dangerous man down the hall so that in case he tries anything the others can use lethal force. He is already dead in the sight of the law, and they should not hesitate to take him out. Sometimes what happens is that death row inmates will resist execution with violence and need to be restrained literally at all cost. "Dead man walking," means take him out if he gets frisky.

All prisoners on the green mile are there to be executed so their fate is death. The term dead man walking relates to his fate, though he is alive 'walking' his fate is a definate one so in other words he's a dead man. Remember, what goes on in the mile stays in the mile!

They say "Dead man walking" because the guy is on the way to the electric chair and is going to die. Once they are condemed to death they are basically already dead to everyone on the mile. I think it is a way to tell everyone that this person is going to die and to give them a little respect.

On death row, the prison guards say "dead man walking" when they are escorting a prisoner to the death chamber because, although the prisoner isn't dead yet, he has been sentenced to death. Get it?
