When down in St Thomas, I'm sure its better to use a taxi due to us "out of towners" not knowing where to go. But I am curious how much do both options cost?
What is the rate of a taxi down there?
Is it worth while to use it instead of renting a vehicle?

It really depends on how much traveling around the island you plan to do. If you're just going from the airport to the hotel and back, taxi might be the better option. But if you're going to be doing multiple trips every day, you might want to look at getting a car. A rental car gives you much more flexibility and taxi fares can really add up quickly. Expect to be herded into a van with a bunch of other people if you're taking a taxi between popular destinations (i.e. from the airport to town). And always ask what the fare will be before you get in the Taxi. They are supposed to have set rates, but if you don't ask, some of them will charge you extra. And watch out for "extra charges" too. If you don't ask up front, you may get to your destination and be told that it's an extra $5 for each of your suitcases, or something like that. It has happened to me several times. So if you have some idea of where you will want to go, you can figure up about what it should cost you and determine if renting a car would be a better option. Also, just in case you were not aware, they drive on the left in St. Thomas. But the cars have the steering wheels on the left, just like in the states. Good luck and have a great trip!

Taxi is way much better than renting a car. Taxi will only cost the price where you want to go. IF you rent a car you have the car but you have to fill gas. whenever it is empty so taxi much better

I think you better off rent a car ,reason is because you won't have to worried of trying to get a Taxi late @ night and i thingk that you save in money wise.

renting a car. you can probalby save money && you have the freedom to come && go as you please.
of course taxi rides are always interesting :]
