You have your choice of any starter ever to be on the mound to start the game, any closer ever to come in and finish it and any batter you want to be standing at the plate with two outs and the game on the line.

Who do you pick for each role?

Starter?
Closer?
Batter?

...and why?!

Players from any time period are allowed, sorry I didn't specify that in the original question. My bad.

Wow...that's tough. There are tons of great guys who could fill every one of these slots, but if I had to pick THE GUY at each spot who I would want out there...I can do that.

Starting Pitcher
Roger Clemens - His entire career he's been flat-out dominant. He has proven that age cannot stop him. He's proven that injuries cannot stop him. He's proven that he can compete with and dominate players who are half his age. He has always been a big game pitcher and has an intensity that is matched by very few and he has the balls to throw up and in on a guy and if someone wants to come up to the mound, he's ready to go toe-to-toe any time. Clemens is simply "The Man" and in my mind is the pitcher I want on the hill in any situation.

Closer
Mariano Rivera - There is no player who has ever compared to Mo on any level. The intensity, the dominance, the sheer beauty of his work on the hill. There isn't anyone in the game who would give you another name if you asked who they'd least want to face in this situation. Rivera is the penultimate closer of this or any era and will probably remain so forever.

Batter
Willie Mays - I know, I know, I know...there are tons of answers that make plenty of sense. Barry Bonds is an incredible hitter and would definitely be on my list, but he can't match Mays. Teddy Ballgame is easily one of the best hitters of all-time, but to me Mays is still the guy. Gwynn, Papi, Jeter, DiMaggio and a tons of others are all great clutch hitters who 9 times out of 10 you'd turn to with the game on the line...but to me, when it's game seven and it's now or never. Willie Mays has to be the man. He is the greatest ballplayer of all-time and played on a wicked combo of guts, grit and heart and I know that if it's all coming down to one pitch...he's going to make them get him out, he's not going to make it easy on them, they're going to have to work to get him out. Mays is my boy.

Great question!

Starter: Nolan Ryan. Would Mow the opponent down
Closer: Mariano Rivera. Greatest closer of all time + Handles pressure very well
Batter: Derek Jeter, if u need a single or double to drive a run in, or Babe Ruth if u needed a HR.

Starter would be Sandy Koufax. An extremely talented pitcher with a wicked delivery is bound to confuse the greatest of batters. Closer would be Dennis Eckersley simply because he is the best to have the title. And the batter would be Ted Williams, I mean seriously, who wouldn't want him there. And who wouldn't want to see the winner of this match up

All of my adult men are gonna be from the Rangers. *worst pitching team in the Majors sniff sniff* Joaquin Benoit (singlehandedly lost a minimum of six video games this year for us) C.J. Wilson (will no longer be able to deal with the rigidity of being a nearer) Kameron Loe (he's in the Minors suitable now for glaring motives) Luis Mendoza (he had his moments, yet he did no longer do properly in forced circumstances) Frank Francisco (all he throws is fastballs; that may no longer gonna do him any reliable. Like that game vs. the purple Sox the place he gave up the three run homer to Youk) So, yeah. i in my opinion miss Ron Mahay; I enjoyed him a lot out of the bullpen. Now i will fairly count on no person in the bullpen. No, scratch that. Eddie Guardado's been reliable, and Dustin Nippert has been stunning for long alleviation. yet absolutely everyone else is suffering.

Starter - Bob Gibson - started 9 W.S. games, completed 8, won 7
1.89 ERA in the series, 2 time W. S. MVP

Closer - Mariano Rivera - guys just nasty, 'nuff said

Batter - Reggie Jackson aka "Mr. October" - .357 W.S. batting average, 10 homeruns, only non pitcher to win 2 WS MVP. Played his best on the biggest stage.

Tom Seaver - Spent an entire career making great hitters look like little leaguers. 300 plus win 3000 plus K's and a lifetime ERA under 3.00 "Tom Terrific" had the greatest delivery of any pitcher in history.

Mariano Rivera - Unhitable with the filthiest fastball in the game. Greatest closer in history.

Don Mattingly - Donny "Baseball" mister money, mister clutch. Should be in the hall of fame

Ever? Starter..Bob Gibson...one mean SOB on the mound Closer..Mariano Rivera about 5 yrs ago...one pitch that no one could hit. Hitter...Tony Gwynn if its just a hit you need, not ahomer. If you need a round trip ticket, lets go with (and the reaction to this should be interesting) Barry Bonds.
