Personally, I have more definition in my leg muscles, though the muscles are not bulky or bulging. I study dance 4 or more night a week, and therefore do have clearly defined leg muscles. Of course, everyone varies and no one is quite the same. Essentially, the added leg muscle just helps to walk around in heels whenever the desire strikes. :) But yes, I do have more defined leg muscles than non-dancers, particularly my calves.

Genetics plays a huge role in how large your muscles will be. I think that it depends on what form of dance also you are doing.
Generally speaking, if a dancer stretches her muscles daily, also before and after classes, the muscle fibers will not bulk up so much. Ballet dancers tend to stretch their muscles more often and more aggressively to ensure that they have excellent extension. Ballet dancers are extremely strong, but, in general do not have huge calves. Tap dancers tend to have larger calves since they do extensive work with their lower legs and ankles. You get the idea.
I think dancer's calves are definitely more defined and cut, but depending on the type of dance and training, not necessarily bigger.
If you are concerned about your calves, just make sure you stretch them out thoroughly....before and after classes and everyday! That will keep the muscle fibers stretched so they don't bulk up and look large.

I don't like the idea of comparing my legs to other girl's legs. Because I have no way of knowing how their bodies change according to their exersise routine and diet and according to their genetic profile. It is much better to compare how your legs looked before you started dancing and after you started dancing. No I don't think my dancing contributed to the change in size of the muscles, maybe only a little bit. But I was swimming competitively before I started dancing...

My daughter is a dancer. And, yes, her calf muscles are noticeably large.
