I did it for my daughter and then once a year we empty it and put as much of it into a scrap book as we can. Here is my list for you...wrapping paper from shower and gifts (the leftover stuff that wasn't used to line the babys dresser drawers) and ribbon this works great in the scrap book, a local newspaper from the day the baby was born, a small box for the babies cord clamp, the benie they put on the babies head, the tape measure used to get the babies length and head, the band aids from the babies first shots, a copy of the mom's record from all her doctors visits while preg., all the cards from people welcoming the baby, a picture of mom and dad, a picture of home baby coming home to, parents cars, also a list of what things cost in todays world, the outfit the baby comes home in, a copy of hospital bills, a couple of pressed flowers from hospital, any and all papers recieved from hospital, a picture of nursery at home, stuff from shower like invite, napkin, decorations, and birth anouncement. I kind of keep everything then like i said go threw it once a year and put the stuff that will fit into a scrap book. One other thing..If you are making the box then make another box that is the size of a reciepe box you know the 3X5 index cards. Fill it full of index cars and get a cute pen. Then the mom, dad, friends and family over the days and years can take out a card write the date on it and anything they want. For example I write things that my daughter is doing, changes she goes thew the way I feel. I also write down memerable moments when I don't have the time to get her scrap book out so I don't for get. It is easy and simple. A month ago she got her first hair cut. I saved a piece of her hair in the keepsake box and then got a card out wrote down the date that she got a hair cut, how she acted and who was there. Now she always has that even if I never finish her scrap books. Good luck and have fun!

the ultrasound pic, the christening gown (that should go to the dry cleaners to be cleaned and sealed like a wedding dress) my daughter was baptized in mine, and her daughter is being baptized in it too., first fork and spoon, if they get a gift of a silver rattle, usually personalized, that should go in.
if Grandma or Great Grandma, or Godmom knit or crocheted a pretty sweater, or something like that, then I would save that, with a noe pinned to it.. origin.
Of course pics of the baby at various stages and events and who's with them.. writing it down on the back will be a lifesaver for bad memories later.
For mine, Each Christmas I would get a different ornament, 2 for each of the kids, each had their name and the year. One went in their baby box(s) the other went on our tree. I even did it for our exchange students.
That way.. when they were grown they had ornaments of their own, I didn't have to give up any memories, and the ornaments all had meaning for them as well.
Even our exchange students took their's home with them.
When our nephew got married.. we got them a really cute little door with a wreath on the front.. that had written above the door
The Smith's
and inside the ribbon, 2006. So they have one and so do we.

I saved mine and the babies wristband from the hospital. The outfit that they came home in. The knit cap the hospital placed on my daughters head. A lock of hair from their first haircut. Newspaper clippings, all the greeting cards that are received. First lost tooth. If cigars, or candybars are given out, save the wrapping from one. The childs first rattle. The list in endless. hope this helped

You could keep newspaper clippings from the day the baby was born. And maybe get family to write letters about how they're feeling and their thoughts to the baby that he or she can read when they're older. Photographs from the day, with the people in them labeled clearly. Don't forget the hospital bracelets, too.
