After "Jurassic Park" (the sequel lacked the excitement of the first) "Prey" was a close second favorite. Especially cool if you like nanotechnology. (Plus, if you are a fan of LOST, many have speculated that the Smoke Monster may be a prey cloud).

"Andromeda Strain" is also good - a bit outdated in the technology department, but like all of his others, it brings up the "Oh Crap! What if he's right?" factor very well. "Congo" is also good - but don't judge a book by its movie. The movie sucked!

State of Fear is worth reading. It's not an extraordinarily good novel but it has a powerful, and valid, message about the way politicians and the media are distorting the global warming issue and manipulating society. There's also some very good information on Crichton's web site.

next wasn't THAT undesirable. That parrot turned right into a hoot. yet Jurassic Park (the e book, no longer the movie. Spieldberg thoroughly RUINED THE GODDAMN movie!!!) became tremendous. State of shock became reliable too. extraordinarily at the same time as Martin Sheen were given eaten alive!!
