Truth? He made it up. He saw what he wanted because a) he wanted to confirm his assumptions (bad science) b) he lacked a lot of data in his point in time...Even now, the debate rages in part, because proponents of evolution refuse to acknowledge the fossil record fails to display the NECESSARY graduations of slight changes required to benefit the species. IE: There are NO partail eyes or feet or ears. Another big problem: fossils of long-necked girraffs are found in the record along side short and short-necked varieties of animals--HOW could they have evolved together if the girraffs didn't need to evolve a long neck?

I don't really know but I have always been impressed with this quote of his not known by a lot of people
