As a cheer mom, cheerleading is as much a sport as any other. My daughter has been cheering since she was 5 years old (she's now 16) and not only practices several times a week, she also actively participates in competitions, camps, and clinics. We've even travelled to Florida for her to participate in the Capital One Bowl half time show.

The last time she broke her ankle (yes, this has happened more than once... along with broken wrists), the ER doctor told me that soccer and cheerleading are the two sports with the most injuries that go through that particular hospital. It's hard work for the kids (girls AND boys) and they do it all without the protection of helmets or padding.

I'll admit that as proud of her as I am, I'll be glad when she's done cheering... it's year round (she's on football, wrestling, and competition squads), it's expensive, and it's dangerous.

Of course it is. It's like gymnastics, but with more attitude. You work your butt off and there are competitions. If fishing is a sport, then I'm sure that cheerleading also qualifies. Just tell anyone who says otherwise to shove it. Or have them try to do a split, a cartwheel, a backhand spring, or any of the other moves cheerleaders often have to do. I'm sure that will shut them up.

YES! It's the most dangerous sport in the U.S. right now. You throw people in the air and catch them and do crazy stunts. People who don't think it's a sport should try doing what we do, they should try learning all the routines or flips or try throwing some one in the air and catching them without the flyer getting hurt.

yes , i defiantly think it is ,you have to be very athletic to be a successful cheerleader you need to be able to lift girls in the air or balance in the air and you need to take gymnastics because you tumble alot in cheerleading and also you need to have the ability to dance and pick up on choreography.cheerleading has evolved greatly cheerleaders don't just wave pompoms they work hard and they have to be in top physical shape.

It's more like an entertainment. For example, dancing or tapdancing, or break-dancing are very athletic entertainments.
They produce a lot of sweat, and if you could extend the exhibition to the shower room, it would be educational also.
