Comodo and Zone Alarm (both linked below) are both free and are bidirectional.

Bidirectional means inbound protection and outbound protection. The outbound protection is in the event that you DO get malware, the application must ask you to get on the net. Zone Alarm is good, but Comodo is better because they look at master application calls. Lets say that I write a virus and have it contect me using Internet Explorer. Since IE is a trusted application to access the net, Zone Alarm will let it through. Comodo will however flag it because IE did not initiate the request to the net.

You have more than firewalls to think about when your subscription runs out...First understand that Norton is going to be a bear to uninstall. Before you even try it, go to their forums and read about how to completely remove. Suggestion: Backup your data first.

You will also need a good antivirus, of which Avast and AVG are two very good free ones. You can ONLY run one AV.

On the realm of anti-spy, the current leader is SUPERantispyware, but Spybot and others are good too. You CAN (and should) run multiple AS programs.

Get a good system monitor like Winpatrol and Ccleaner. Its OK to run both.

I would COMPLETELY avoid other free applications, unless you research them completely. There is a lot of crap on the net that claim to be anti-this and anti-that, but in reality, they ARE malware.

Side note: If you have a good FW, AV, AS, SysMon as listed above, AND are behind a router that does NAT, you will be rock solid. Not indestructable if you do something stupid like ignoring the warnings you get and going to hack/porn/filesharing sites...

NEVER open an unknown email attachment, ESPECIALLY one that ends in .COM - its NOT a website, but a COMmand that is executed in windows.

avg and norton are'nt firewalls, they are viral scanners. if you have avg in your system with the windows firewall working, then you'll be fine till you get another viral scanner. if you want to use a single viral malware scanner, get the best which is prevx. it is a trial with full program access and does everything the paid one does. it is better than anything out their. any of the free programs don't protect you. they only remove about 60% of anything and that isn't including the new problems. this is all prevx does is about viral and malware programs nothing else. they protect 100%. read what the site has to say and do the download. select the one in red.. you won't be dissapointed ..

An excellent free and very strong firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.

And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company (Melih) might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/

Or if you prefer a good and free firewall that is extremely easy on using your computer's system resources, then Kerio 2.1.5 is just about the lightest firewall there is. Uses about 4 MB RAM on my machine.

Although it is no longer officially supported by the makers of Kerio, there is a great Kerio 2.1.5 support forum at
http://www.dslreports.com/forum/kerio
to help and guide you if you have any problems.

2.1.5 is availible for free at:

If you have an old PC laying around, use Smoothwall. I don't really like windows software firewalls as they really aren't as secure as you'd think. A linux firewall sitting between you and the internet would be best, or....buy a linksys router and stick that between you and the internet.

Use the default one that Windows provides..or if you dont want to use the windows firewall, buy the better version of AVG and use AVG's firewall. There is also zone alarm from zone labs..

Zone Alarm by Zone Labs is recognized as the gold standard of free (or even commercial) firewalls.

Your windows firewall should be sufficient. I use Trend Micro Antivirus and Webroot Spy Sweeper.
