A common mode of spread for viruses is through "aerosol", or "respiratory droplets". This means that particles in the air become transporters for viruses. For example, when you yawn, have you ever seen droplets come out of your mouth? Well water particles from your respiratory system can escape into the air, and get into the respiratory tracts of other people.

depend on what type of viruses
some viruses can only be spread by contact (like sexual contact or blood transfusion) as they are weak and would be inactived once exposed to external environment
water-borne viruses can be spread via aqueous medium like water (from pipes), body fluids etc
air-borne viruses can be spread by air --> the viruses are floating in the air...

Viruses are very delicate actually, and don't survive for very long outside of their host environment, but viruses can be passed through the air, open cuts, coughing, dirty, hands, sexual contact, the ocean is virus soup
