I have been on Ortho Evra for 3-4 years. Last week Wed. I took my patch off in the morning like usual but forgot to put on the last patch of the month until about 5pm. Could I be at risk for pregnancy? Thanks!

First of all, let me say, I am not sure why some people even bother to answer questions. The previous poster who simply said "you're always at risk for pregnancy" was not helpful and most likely did absolutely nothing to validate or assauge the fears of the asker. You people who obviously can't help, and don't want to, should just keep your nosy little fingers away from the keyboard.

Now that I've ranted, let me answer the question. While it is true that no form of birth control is 100% effective (except abstinence), most are fairly safe and do prevent 95%-99% of pregnancies, depending on the method.

It is very important to remember to use your birth control method as directed, however, everyone makes mistakes. From what you've said, you went less than 12 hours before placing on your Ortho Evra patch, and according to the insert that accompanies the patches, you should be just as safe as if you had replaced it immediately. The medication delivered by Ortho Evra can remain in your system for around 24-48 hours before you become completely exposed to pregnancy. You have around a 95% chance of being just as safe as if you had remembered the patch right off.

Since this was your last patch of the month, your period should be starting in the next week or so, when you remove this patch. As long as your period begins as it normally does, you shouldn't worry. However, if you're still concerned, wait until your period ends and simply take a pregnancy test. If you haven't had sex since the incident, simply abstain (i.e. don't have sex), until after your period. It's impossible to get pregnant if no sperm enters your vagina, so just keep those pants up and you'll be safe!

Good Luck!

Probably not. But read all that fine print that comes with the package. I know for sure it details all that information. I would use extra protection for the next week just to be safe. Better safe than sorry!

You might be pregnant, but more then likely you're ok. Just be more careful at remembering next time. if by chance you don't have your period, take a pregnancy test.

Yes you could be, but I wouldn't run out and buy a crib just yet.
