There is no requirement for children of any age to attend school. The requirementis that they must have a full time education from the term following their fifth birthday. So if they turn five after the 31st march 07 they must be recieving an education wheather at school or at home from september. If they turn 5 after 31st january 07 then they must recieve an education at school or otherwise at the beginning of the spring term. They don't have to attend school but if they don't the parents have to ensure that they are still recieving an education although this doesn't have to be the national curriculum.

There is no actual law that states children have to go to school. The law merely states that they must receive an education covering certain subjects. This usually begins when the child is aged between 4 and 5 and depends upon the time of year they were born.

School is not compulsory provide you can demonstrate to the satisfaction of your local education authority that your child is being appropriately educated.
The age at which children start school varies in different authorities. My older children started school the September before their 5th birthdays. This made them 4 years 9 months and 4 years 6 months respectively. My youngest started school in a different town where individual schools make the decision. He started in the summer term before his 5th birthday so he was 4 years 11 months. If he'd gone to a different school he'd have started the previous September

My cousin's little girl started full time education in September 2006 and she was 4 years plus one week - normally the school ccepts children aged 4 and a half, but all her friends turned 4 earlier in the year and the headteacher didn't want her to feel left out or get to far behind.

Children will pass their 5th birthday in a reception class (state schools). Nursery is not complusory but is a big advantage.
