The better materials to make tools out of are high carbon steels or a stainless steel. Aluminium, brass, copper or tin are not good enough to make them from.
There are sources of such materials for the home pick maker that you may already have laying around the home. These include: Hacksaw blades, junior hacksaw blades, windshield) wiper inserts (these are strips of metal found running through the rubber wipers), basically any good saw blade can be used, a used spring from a tape measure etc etc,
Whatever works at the time. I made a decent pick out of a nail bent, pounded flat and filed to profile. It replaced a lost skeleton key for a landlord.
