I live in Texas and I'm planning on becoming a fashion designer or a boutique owner. Which would be better? And please don't say 'well thats your decision and it depends on your personality.' And if so, where would be the best place to open a boutique in Texas? In the country? About how much does it cost? And where's a good school to go to in Texas? In the country? Anything is greatly appreciated thank you so much!

i would say both
design clothes and sell them in your boutique
who knows, if you're good and have reasonable prices you might be famous [:
i'd say that the most famous design school in the US is
parsons school of design in nyc
many famous designers have graduated from there.

if you become famous, send me some clothes. [:

As a fellow Texan, I think a boutique would get the most business in well-established fashion districts in cities like Houston or Dallas. The only people willing to pay boutique prices are the ones who can afford to shop at chic boutiques regularly. But then you have to think about renting (or buying) a space, which, of course, can get quite pricey in nicer commercial areas.
I'd say go to school wherever you can to learn about the fashion industry. The best/most well-known would be Parsons in NYC, but there are so many others; you just need to spend a little time doing some internet research. I think going to school will expose you to so many more ideas and show you what's going on in the fashion world; you might pick up some tricks of the trade. Plus, if for nothing else, go to school for the connections you can make through your classmates and your school's alumni. If you go on to look for a job with a company, I think it would be better to show some experience with your school work and possibly get recommendations from your professors and alumni. And not only do you need to know about design and clothing construction, but it would also be a big plus to learn about the business/marketing/retail aspects of the industry. Opening your own boutique and/or starting your own line will cost lots, so you'll need to know how to manage that.
Good luck to you :)

If it were me I think I'd rather be a boutique owner. This way you could choose what you want to sell and even include a few of your own customized pieces. Eventually you could get into more fashion designing but owning a store would help support you until then.

Also cost of opening a boutique would vary. You need to be sure to account for building rent and utilities (if not included in the rent) along with stocking the store and other supplies. If you were seriously interested, then you might could talk to another store owner, if you know one personally (they might not help you since you'd be competition)

It really does depend, but on this.....to be a fashon designer you have to go through EVERY aspect of designing from designing the clothes, running the business part of it and making the clothes. I wanted to be a fashion designer but all i wanted to do was to actually just design clothes and the guy told me i HAVE to do all of it not just one part, so it depends on if you want to go through every part or if your just wanting to do one part. If you only want to do one part then id say do your boutique, but if your interested in it all then i would go through with the fashion design and then later if you still want a boutique then you will be successful enough to do both.

I think you should be a fashion designer, but if you want to be a famous one or something, then your not going to be able to do it in the country, because how many people go shopping for designer clothes in the country?
