It depends on what craft you are doing and what kind of thread you are using. Usually no, but check the direction on your project for tips, or do a web search. If you post the type of project, I could help more, sorry.

For me, it depends on what I'm sewing. If I'm embroidering something, I don't use any knots at all. I just make sure the thread has a nice kink in it where the needle sits at and hold the other end down to the fabric untill I've sewn over it a few times. If I'm mending something, however, I double the thread over and knot the ends together, and use the needle in the middle. You never ever ever lose the needle that way, as you have to cut it out once you're done.

Usually. I often thread the string through the eye a few times to keep it in, then just make sure my thumb is constantly holding the thread in the eye. It can be a pain to have knots in thread.

Tie a few knots at the end of teh string to keep it from slipping throguh the eye of the needle as well as it needs something to keep it from falling through the fabric.

what i do is leave a 2 1/2 inch tail and hold the tail to the needle while i stitch.
