Still 'reasonable force'. But this is subjective, i.e. what YOU think is reasonable force under the circumstances. You would not be expected to sit down and contemplate the options - so you may over-react, depending on the circumstances - but neither are you expected to use a sledge-hammer to crack a nut.
Picture this. You meet up with a kid of 12 in your house. Looks harmless, but is high on drugs, and will kill you if you get in his way.
Alternatively, a giant of a man in a balaclava, armed with a gun - whose sole intent is to get your video for his next drink, and would never use the gun. The law does not expect you to make too rational a decision in the split second you have to decide.
But all this is under constant review. Consider Martin, the Norfolk farmer, who shot dead a burglar in the dead of night. His sentence was reduced on appeal.

I do not know the Law in England, but I know this..I keep a pick handle beside my bed..if an intruder should happen into my home..I would use it to render the culprit incapacitated..reach into their wallet..remove their driving license or similar current address..remove the body outside into the street and call the police anonymously saying a body is in the street..The victim becomes the victim again in this crazy world..not the bad guy..cops got a body..possibly with priors..you have their address if they want to think about getting cute..Justice for you.I don't care about the well-being of thieves and murderers any more.

The law has not changed. You can use reasonable force only. The degree of force is decided purely on the circumstances so if it ever happens be careful what you say to the police. It is best to shut up until you have taken legal advice as people are hyped up following such an incident.

You kick the S'hit out of them ..then " make sure you have a witness.." . put on some rubber gloves - drag the scum out of your house onto the pavement or road..watch there is no busy-bodies peeking out their curtains.. and leave him/her lying there ..get back into your home - tidy up any tell tale signs the pest was in your home - stick your clothes and shoes in the tumble dryer.. then phone the Police the next day - and tell them you want a crime reference number someones has been in your home...You Saw & Heard Nothing - in the UK the Police would rather do you for assault GBH/ABH - than do the Burglar....looks better on the crime stat's. Or else if you cant be bothered with all that - Just tell the Burglar to take the electrical goods TV/Video etc.. But stay out of the Wifes Knicker drawer

It's called 'reasonable force' which unfortunately is determined by a Judge or jury! So it also depends on whether the intruder is armed with any type of weapon and how big you are in comparison to them!

You can defend yourself as long as you do not use unnessary force. As in batter them to death!

Not like America where you can shoot someone who knocks on your door to ask for help as their car has broken down, Because you thought they might want to rob you!
