be precautious, try to be like the locals.. dont go into empty streets, esp. in tourist places like copacabana e ipanema (i know many tourists who have been robbed there) and be careful with your movements at night, try to stick with a group. be careful with taxis too, use the radio taxis (they are more expensive but more safe) and keep an eye out on the bus too. just carry a little money on you and passport photocopy - its a little risky to carry a wallet in case theives see the outline of it in your pocket
the biggest thing - do not get paranoid. paranoia is the worst thing as theives will tend to notice you more. even if you have no idea where you are, 'pretend' that you know where you are going! also, dont miss the chance to visit the other parts of the state - saquarema, buzios (north of rio), teresopolis and petropolis (two nice cities in the mountains, about an hour away, and ilha grande, which is on the southern coast.
the city will leave a big impression on you so try to soak up as much as you can and enjoy it while you're there

With its bright sandy beaches, increasing mountains and picturesque harbour, it's no surprise that Rio de Janeiro is known as the "cidade maravilhosa", or marvellous town and with hotelbye you can take the possibility and visit this unique city. Rio de Janeiro is experiencing the South Atlantic coast and may be the second-largest city in Brazil. That city is fortunate with one of the very most beautiful normal settings for a city in the world. The dazzling landscape is one of the causes that visitors chose Rio de Janeiro. Throughout carnival time, a festival that every one heard, the streets load with music and ornately costumed dancers getting tourists from all over the globe.

I don't feel Rio is as dangerous as they make it out to be. Maybe in Rocinha, but if you stay out of the favelas it's definitely not any different than Chicago, Miami, New York or L.A. The city is BEAUTIFUL, and for the most part the people are very nice and helpful. However I went with family, and it did help having men around when out clubbing at night. However, I always go in August, and it's getting so close to Carnaval that I'd assume more tourists and thus more security in the area. Be smart, don't leave your drinks around the bar. The JW Marriott is VERY nice, and has good security if that would give you added peace of mind. Their beach area is always a bit more comfortable, as you aren't hassled as much by local vendors. Make sure you take the RADIO taxis when traveling, and NEVER bring your passport with you, leave it in the hotel. If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to email me. Have fun, it's a wonderful place!

It's not true that they have an organs market there. But Rio is a rather dangerous place, even for locals. I wouldn't recommend you to go there, there are other nice cities in Brazil that you can visit, for example, in the south area.

i've been twice and never experienced any problems..
Just take state aware like you would in any other city .. notice the people around you and the envirnment. Dont walk anywhere by yourself at night .. stick with the crowds.
Dont have your camera visible .. or any other expensive items.
I wanted to take my camera on the beach .. for beautiful pics of the mountains.. but .. i would rather not have those pics .. then .. having my camera stolen and not have any pics ! But if you are taking a tour .. it should be alright.. since you'll be around many cameras and a guide.
Boa Sorte

Well, Im Brazilian and I live now at capital Brazil (Brazilia). I lived at Rio de Janeiro since 3 years and I can help you.
.
Rio de Janeiro is big city who have high and middle class. Have 20 milh habitantes. Have some favelas - they form lower classl. The middle class use drog. The drog is make in favelas by traffics, but more people of favelas are honests. However, sometimes have war between trafficker of one favela with trafficker of outher - its very danger for people who walk between favelas. because trafficker (deshonest) kill themselvs. Policeman use big armaments to kill trafficker. My mother and my 2 system live and work at Rio de Janeiro. One of my sister is lf army. Rio is danger when have war between traficker at favelas(favelas stay at big mountains). Rio have beautiful girls and beaches and good districts is Leblon, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca (danger is Rocinha favela), but I dont like this districts because have favelos around. I like Angra dos Reis, Saquarema, Quissamã, where no have favelas and traffics and have good people and beautiful girls, beaches and no have thiefs.
Brazil have democracy an the presidente is Luis Inacio Lula da Silva and the presidente ordered national force since feb. stay at Rio de Janeiro. Because this, the govern want social order.
Speak for your friend to dont use iewel, irinket, and dont use expensive clothes -never. Use simple clothers, Dont use clock, computer at street or beach. Dont go to ZONA NORTE, is danger. Zona Sul (South of Rio) have distrits: Leblon (good, but have VIDIGAL favela), Ipanema (good but have CANTAGALO FAVELA), COPACABANA and LEME (have favela very danger), BOTAFOGO and Flamengo (have ST MARTA favela), Barra da TIJUCA (ROCINHA FAVELA - THE BEST DANGER).
NORTH ZONE of Rio - Have some with favelas -
LINHA VERMELHA - RED LINE - DONT GO THERE - is very danger because have some favelas.
When I live in Rio, and I go to favelas to Crinstian Misson (Im catolics) I conclued who Rio have some favelas because dont have social politics of habitation and family program, for some years ago. Is very bad see this.
Say for he to dont walk at streets Rios tonight, Ok?

Watch where you go, watch out for the cabbies. Stay in a reputable hotel and become very good friends with the concierge.
