Whenever I had an assignment that was to read a book about someone, I always chose someone that I admired or at least found very interesting. However, I also tried to avoid anyone that would have generated negative vibes from the teacher. As far as the choice between biography or auto-biography, I think I would choose a biography unless the individual was a good writer. Not everyone who has had an interesting life could write his or her life story in an interesting, entertaining manner. (Of course, many autobiographies are "as told to" so the "ghost writer" is responsible for getting the story into a readable format.)
If you anticipate a requirement for a term paper in another subject, you might want to select a book that might fill both requirements. For example, if you are taking American History and will need to do a paper, then reading a book on George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, etc. might work for both. However, if you are studying World History, then try for one of the big names from WWII, like Churchill, de Gaulle, Eisenhower, McArthur, etc. (In college I was able to use the book The Children of Sanchez for both an education class and a child psychology class. I had to do two separate papers, but avoiding the necessity to read a second book saved tons of time.)

No book that long is interesting... But you should do a Biography on someone old and well-known, maybe someone that interests you at all. =)
