My brother (8 years old) asked me why people are gay. I have no idea how to answer him informatively because I do not want him to turn out like those kids who have no respect for other's sexual orientation. Please help!

If not every question has an answer and I leave him like this, he will be pressured into believing being gay is wrong. Many people in his school think so.

Even though most people are right handed, that doesn't mean that left handed people are bad or wrong; and even though most people are straight, that doesn't mean that gay people are bad or wrong.
It is just a naturally occurring difference.

Simple Biology. Hair Color, Eye Color, Right or Left handed or Sexual Orientation. No one has control over these naturally occuring differences.
Whether you were around one parent more than another has nothing to do with being gay.
Parents may impact whether the gay child lives their life openly or is made to live a lie.

Just tell him it's the same as some people being born with a distaste for spinach. It's just part of who they are and they can't change it, even if they wanted to. They can pretend to like spinach, but all that will do is make them unhappy every time they have it on their plate.

same reason some people write with the left hand instead of right hand.. it's a biological thing. some people are just born a little differently than most.. and nothing wrong with that. only religion and society seems to think we all have to act and "be" one particular way..

Tell your brother they were born that way. When someone is gay, it depends on how their situation is with both parents. Take Chasity Bono (Cher's and Sonny Bono's daughter.) Do you think that Cher was around every day of her life before she hit puberty? No, so maybe that was why she turned lesbian. If Cher was around, she probably would have had a different sexual oreintation. A child has to bond with both parents to be hetero. They can't be close to one parent at all.

Simple: genetics. People are gay for the same reason people have red hair or are tall or have male-pattern baldness. It is in their dna and part of their chemical balance.
