Because they need to be able to hear themselves in order to sing at the right pitch. They are monitor speakers such as they have in a recording studio. In the recording studio they are large headphones but on stage they are incorporated into an earpiece.

They listen to themselves. While onstage, infront of an audience, the echo or sounds that the audience is making can be distracting. They wear the earpieces so that they can better hear themselves.

Those are called "in ear monitors" and they get direct feeds of music or vocals. Sometimes monitors onstage can be drowned out if the band is too loud so this way-they get a direct feed

it rather is many times an in-ear computer screen. that is used to pay attention the band (or tape :P) enjoying over all the different surrounding noises. they're a large thank you to maintain up with something of the band, i think of everybody could use them.
