they crawl around and nibble small organisms and algae off the surface of the rocks. They have some sort of a small "mouth" on the bottom, turned towards the floor, so when they move, the mouth stays as close to the ground as possible.

Sea urchins feed mainly on algae. Sea urchin is one of the favorite foods of sea otters. Recently the population of sea otters in the Monterey Bay of California has diminished. As a result, the population of sea urchins has multiplied and they are quickly consuming the kelp forest in the area and upsetting the ecosystem. Left unchecked, urchins will devastate their environment, creating what biologists call an urchin barren, devoid of macroalgae and associated fauna.

Sea urchins feed on various types of organic matter, including plants, small animals, and waste material. Some species, called heart urchins, lack jaws and burrow into sand or mud for their food.

There are many species of sea urchins. However they all pretty much are scavengers. Classed as an omnivore because they pretty much consume what ever they come across. Mostly algae, but zooplankton and phytoplankton also. Most any good good saltwater aquarium will have one. They are also consider a delicacy.
