why are people pressured to fit in with others?

Why is society so obsessed about belonging to a certain group of people? Why do people loose their individuality to follow someone else? Does this effect society?

yeah it does because people are to focused on trying to become part of the in-crowd as they call it

I have a theory - males. Sorry, but I obviously don't mean offense as I am a male - but our agressive attitude has spurred many useless , obviously ridiculous theories, among them:
1.) Race
2.) the inferiority of women
3.) circumcision
